Tune: Immortals on the Magpie Bridge
—Written upon my 30th birthday, riding alone to Yuanmingyuan Park, 1960
Half a pool of withered plants,
After rounds of autumn rain,
A few wild chrysanthemums remain.
When the west wind goes frost comes as usual,
Flowers are yellow, leaves green again.
Vast is this earthly world,
Long the journey in pain,
Life is a game of chess to lose or gain.
Prosperity and adversity are both normal,
Twists and turns no one can detain.
Note:
Yuanmingyuan Park at the time was a scene of desolation, with few tourists.
